10/26/2011 - UPDATE
Good News, the first goal has been accomplished and Emory's Winship Cancer Center has confirmed the receipt of $10,708 from my efforts so far. I've completed about 45 miles this year in competition. This fall my miles should have greatly increased however another sickness has caused me to lose a month of training and I'll still be out a week or two more. This means I won't be able to complete the marathon in California but I'm going to try to squeeze in one more half marathon. It's not too late to donate! Contact me for details or send checks to:

This site started out as a way to keep people updated on my family and a way to find other Griffeth's out in the world. Now it has a new focus and that's to help update friends on my cancer battle and to help raise awareness and funds to help to continue to battle cancer so that others will survive and have a story to share like mine.
On September 29, 2008, I was diagnosed with Melanoma. The prognosis was grim and surgery became an urgent necessity. Medical tests revealed further health issues and the health of my heart became a concern. I was posed with the idea of dying on the table during a surgery that I needed to survive or dying from the cancer itself. The morning of October 7th, my doctors decided to go ahead with the cancer surgery with the assumption that if I could be a regular runner, then my heart was strong enough for surgery.
I’m now almost completely cancer free. Every doctor I came into contact with was amazing and the support I received during the process was even more so. So I’ve decided to use my running to give back to those that help people like me survive cancer every day. I’m looking for support this year to help with the long term goals I’ve set for myself. I am hoping that by the end of July, I will be able to raise a minimum of $10,000 for the Emory Winship Cancer Center. (http://cancer.emory.edu) My experience at Emory can’t be put into words, so I’m going to do whatever I can to help support their efforts as they continue to make huge strides in the war against cancer.
My first event was the ING Half Marathon at the end of March, which I ran in support of St. Jude’s Hospital. Soon after that, my wife registered me for the Peachtree Road Race, even though the possibility of the arrival of my newborn son that day was very high. I wasn’t motivated to run until I remembered that this is an opportunity to make a difference. He ended up being born on June 24th (my birthday also) so I was able to participate in the Peachtree Road Race.
What I’m looking for is support from everyone- one mile at a time. If everyone could donate $1 per mile for each race that I enter and complete, that small amount can turn into something grand. I’ve been blessed to have a large number of extraordinary people in my life and I know that, together, we can help fight something that affects us all.
If you will commit to a per mile donation for the 2009 calendar year, please email me. I plan to keep this website updated with information regarding my efforts. You will be able to see upcoming events, donations raised and new goals as they emerge.
I will total up the miles run between March and July and by the end of July I will contact those that are willing to donate and collect checks made out to Winship Cancer Institute which will be tax deductible. Of course if I do end up running hundreds of miles this year I'm not going to hold anyone to an exact dollar amount. It's more of a goal and a motivation to make sure the constant reminder is there to keep fighting cancer on the current to-do list! If you designate a per mile donation and times turn tough don't worry, I'll keep updating everyone on the progress and there will be plenty of future goals to donate towards if things end up better, and surely they will.
If you can’t donate money, please consider donating your time as a volunteer. Charity events can’t happen without hundreds of volunteers working behind the scenes, so your time is just as valuable as your money. Every little bit helps, because, in the end, it all adds up to an extraordinary effort!
Thank you for your support! I hope this letter finds everyone well. If nothing else, schedule an appointment with a dermatologist and check your moles... it saved my life.
